Bi*&%h

I know the following story is totally inappropriate, but I find it strangely uplifting and important to my teaching.

I have never been the most assertive person in the world. I knew when I became a teacher that I would have to develop these skills fast. I compensate by being tough, strict, but I try to be fair.

I have been starting each class period with a few questions from the students. Any questions. About anything. They tell me what's going on in their lives and usually ask me what I did the night before. Usually, often a few questions they ask what we are going to do today (even though it is written on the board) and we ease into that day's activities.

Lately, the sophomores have been complaining about the new math teacher. They think she is mean, rude, and hard. I think this is a great thing...we did not make AYP because of math scores and we need a hard nosed teacher in there.

I act all upset, because I am supposed to be the meanest and strictest teacher in the school. I am the one with high expectations. I tell the kids I need to go and get some pointers from the new math teacher. I'm obviously slipping. The kids scream no, that I am not like her and I should not try to imitate her. I'm great the way I am.

Puht boy sagely put it like this, "She is A b##$h, you are THE b#$%h."

I said thank you, and I didn't know they cared so much.

My New MP3 Player

I don't buy expensive stuff for myself often. The only thing I really spend a lot of money on is books. Also, I consider myself up to date on most new technology. However, I didn't have a mp3 player...until now.

I got tired of buying entire albums (CDs they are called now :) ) and only liking one song out of twelve. And CDs break easy and I tend not to pay attention to breakable stuff. And, my CD collection got stolen about 4 years ago. Renter's insurance paid for it, but I haven't rebuilt my collection yet.

So, I bought one of these. I have been shopping around for one, but I really hadn't found one that I liked. I was buying some music from Walmart downloads (I know Walmart is the anti Christ, but I'm a redneck, so of course I shop there) to download on my laptop. But I hate lugging my laptop everywhere just to listen to music. So I started online shopping. Walmart shipped me this in 3 days!!

Of course, I had to set up the software. Since I had to be at school yesterday (aghhh!, another teacher set everything up for me. This morning I started transferring all my CDs to the player. Pretty slick!!

Only two little glitches. I thought it would be a good idea to delete all the music from my laptop. So after I deleted all the music, I went to add something to the mp3 player and everything deleted off the player, too! I screamed. But all I had to do was go into the recycle bin and put all the music back on.

Also, I don't like the earphones. Do you ever find the little ear buds headphones just uncomfortable? Maybe my ear canals are very abnormally small. I don't know. I have my other headphones that fit over the entire ear. Much more comfortable.

So, I will enjoy my Sunday with this little machine. Gradings not done, nor are lesson plans. I am trying not to work so hard. I am trying to enjoy myself in my own little boring way.
